14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

What does or did Jesus mean by 'many are called, but few are chosen' ?
Was He trying to tell us that some people have already been condemned; or that some people shouldn't waste their time getting saved?
NO! The true meaning behind this verse can be found in Jesus' parable of the sower.
In this parable Jesus talks about four groups of people called by God: people who have had the gospel of salvation preached to them.
The first group of people hear the gospel like everybody else, but their doubts about it, gives the devil a chance to steal the word (the incorruptible seed 1 Peter 1:23) from them;
The second group of people (also called by God), allowed temptations and worldly lusts to corrupt them thus taking them out of the list of those who will be chosen;
The third do the same by chasing the things of this world described in 1 John 2:16, things that lead them back to sin. The people in the third group are the ones Jesus was talking about when He said, "No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon" (Matthew 6:24).
The forth group of people (who were also called), didn't just hear the word but allowed it to mould their lives; they were obedient to God and their faith pleased Him. These are the people who will be chosen.
In Job, we are also told that God speaks to us in many ways; through dreams, visions and so. He is calling us all (every human being in this world), but only those who hear and do His word as we are told in James 1:22 and Romans 2:13 will be chosen.
